Joliet Public Schools District 86 came to a unanimous 7-0 vote to close A.O. Marshall Elementary School at the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
Students who attend Marshall will be transferred to Isaac Singleton Elementary School.
“I understand that a change of this significance is not easy,” said Dr. Theresa Rouse, Joliet Public Schools District 86 Superintendent. “We are committed to making the transition to a new school as smooth as possible for our students, families, and staff.”
Marshall currently serves 210 students spanning from kindergarten to fifth grade, with an average classroom size of 14 students.
Singleton has 366 students enrolled, with an average classroom size of 20.
The 2026-2027 school year Singleton classroom size is projected to be 25 students, accounting for the transfers from Marshall.
Marshall has served the Joliet Public Schools District for 102 years, being built in 1924.
“Making a decision to close a school is extremely difficult,” said Board of School Inspectors President Jesse Smith. “We know how special Marshall is to many students, employees, and families.”
An open house for Marshall students will be held in May at Isaac Singleton for students and families to familiarize themselves with the school and meet administrators, staff, and other students.
