The Spanish Community Center (SCC) has played an important role in supporting the Will County community for over fifty years. What started as a small effort has grown into a trusted organization that continues to make a real difference in people’s lives.

The SCC helps improve the quality of life for Latinos, immigrants, and low-income individuals by providing accessible educational and social services. They help support families by focusing on connecting people to the right resources, as they can work towards stability and growth.

The organization was founded over 50 years ago by Adler, Maher, and Hernandez, who saw a need within the migrant community in Joliet. Spanish-speaking families who faced challenges when trying to access basic services. Rather than waiting around for change to happen, they decided to be the change. Starting in a small house on Herkimer Street, the SCC became a place where people could find help and guidance

As the community continued to grow, so did the Spanish Community Center. In the early 1980s, the organization moved to its current location, allowing it to expand its services and reach more individuals and families. This move allowed the organization to expand its services and reach more individuals and families as the community continued to grow.

Today, the SCC remains the only bilingual one-stop shop of social and educational services in Will County. While it was originally created to serve Spanish-speaking individuals, it now proudly serves people from all backgrounds. This reflects the organization’s commitment to being inclusive and meeting the needs of a diverse community.

The services offered by the SCC are designed to support individuals at different stages of life. From educational programs to workforce development and family services, the center provides resources that help people move forward. One of the most important aspects of the SCC is its ability to offer these services in both English and Spanish, helping remove language barriers that often prevent people from seeking assistance.

Beyond its programs, the Spanish Community Center creates a sense of community. For many families, especially those who are new to the area, it serves as a welcoming space where they can feel supported and connected. It is not just about the services provided, but also about the relationships built and the trust developed over time.

The impact of the SCC can be seen across Will County. Over the years, it has helped individuals find opportunities, supported families through challenges, and provided resources that lead to long-term success. Its work continues to make a difference in both small and meaningful ways.

As the community continues to grow and change, the Spanish Community Center remains committed to its mission. What began as a small initiative on Herkimer Street has become a key resource in the community. It shows how a group of dedicated individuals can create lasting change and continue to uplift others for generations to come.
