Joliet city council approved a $1,027,136 contract with Chicago company Staalsen Construction Co. to renovate the Ottawa street parking garage.
Greg Ruddy, Joliet’s director of public works, encouraged city council to spend the additional funds with the Joliet City Square Project in mind.
The Joliet City Square Project is set to help revitalize Downtown Joliet with renovations like reconstructing Chicago street, the addition of a sculpture, and a new plaza across from the Rialto Square Theatre.
Ruddy’s memo states, ”Construction is underway on the City Square project. To support the new facility, several modifications are required at the adjacent Ottawa Street Parking Garage. These include building an electrical room, IT room, equipment garage, and storage rooms within the deck, as well as adding a salt storage shed next to the structure.”
Four companies competed for the project, but Staalsen submitted the lowest bid for the job, coming in at $572,864 under the initial $1.6 million estimate.
Ruddy’s memo said, ”Based on the above, it is recommended that the Mayor and City Council award the Contract for the Joliet City Square – Ottawa Street Parking Garage Building Modifications, in the amount of $1,027,136.00, on behalf of Staalsen Construction.”
